Selected by Gold Coast with pick 4 in the 2016 National Draft, Ben Ainsworth arrived from Gippsland Power as a highly touted small forward prospect. While he initially made his name through impact near goal, he developed into a hard-running high half-forward known for his elite work rate and field kicking. Rather than operating purely as a crumbing forward, Ainsworth utilised his endurance to push up the ground, winning possession on the wing before delivering the ball inside 50, effectively serving as the connector between the Suns' midfield and their key targets.

Ainsworth remained a loyal servant to Gold Coast for nine seasons, providing crucial stability and leadership during a prolonged period of list regeneration. After 158 games and becoming a fixture of the Suns' best 22, he departed the club at the end of the 2025 season to join Carlton. Returning to his home state of Victoria, Ainsworth arrived at Princes Park as a seasoned veteran, adding necessary experience and pressure to the Blues' forward mix while offering a polished option for their transition play.
