Bio
Born Benjamin Baxter Box, this solid defender’s journey to the elite level began with a unique personal history; following the death of his mother in 1891, he was fostered by Mornington magistrate Benjamin Baxter and subsequently adopted his surname. A reliable backman who could also operate along the wing, Baxter broke into the Essendon lineup in 1902 and quickly became a consistent figure during a competitive era for the Same Olds. While he missed selection for the club's 1902 Grand Final side, he was a regular fixture in the seasons that followed, helping Essendon reach the finals in every year of his career. He retired after the 1906 season, having played 67 games as a dependable contributor for the red and black.
