Family

Recruited from local side West Footscray, Bernie Laffey was the younger brother of long-serving Bulldogs defender Merv Laffey. While he struggled to command a regular spot in the senior lineup at the Western Oval, managing just four games as a 21-year-old during the 1949 season, he found his true footing after crossing to the VFA. A skilled centreman, Laffey became a standout for Port Melbourne, anchoring their midfield to win the club's Best and Fairest award in 1954 and featuring in that year's Grand Final. Though his time at the top level was a brief cameo, he remained a highly respected figure in the Victorian sporting community, maintaining a decades-long association with the APSOC cross-country athletics competition until his passing in 2023.
