Recruited from local side West Footscray, Merv Laffey was a stockily built rover and forward pocket who became a reliable avenue to goal for the Bulldogs in the immediate post-war years. Breaking into the senior lineup in 1945, he utilised his low centre of gravity and sharp ground-level skills to crumb effectively off the packs, often drifting forward to punish opposition defences. His most significant individual campaign arrived in 1947 when he topped the club's goalkicking with 47 majors, shouldering the scoring load during a competitive but ultimately fruitless period for the team. A consistent servant who gave first-class effort for the Tricolours, Laffey concluded his VFL career at the end of the 1952 season, missing the club's historic maiden premiership by just two years.
