Recruited from Chadstone, Bill Beckwith arrived at Punt Road with a strong football pedigree as the nephew of Melbourne premiership captain John Beckwith. He made an immediate impression in the lower grades, topping the Under-19s goalkicking in a premiership campaign before making his senior debut against Collingwood at just 16 years of age. A sharp rover and forward pocket, he showed glimpses of high-end talent but found it difficult to crack a permanent spot in Tom Hafey's dominant squad, battling both squad depth and persistent injury setbacks. Beckwith eventually departed for the VFA during the 1973 season, where he revitalised his career at Port Melbourne, notably featuring in their 1974 premiership side before moving on to coach and play at Highett.
