Emerging from the Port Melbourne Juniors, Bill Freyer earned his place on the South Melbourne list in 1925 through a gruelling trial process, selected as one of just six successful candidates from a field of 100 hopefuls. A defender noted for his speed and clever positioning, he was immediately tasked with minding dangerous opposition forwards, although his debut season was interrupted by injury, including a nasty collision with teammate Charlie Stanbridge. After 12 games in the red and white, Freyer requested a mid-season clearance to Footscray in 1926, where he became the club's 50th league player and added seven senior appearances to his tally. The brother of Essendon winger Ted Freyer, Bill served as a reliable backman during his brief VFL tenure before departing the top level.
