Bio
Recruited from Gaffney's Creek, Bill Marchbank was a burly utility best remembered as the half-brother of Carlton premiership star Jim Marchbank. While he lacked the height and athletic profile of his famous sibling, he possessed a heavy frame that made him a physical presence during his brief stint at Princes Park in 1908. Unable to secure a regular spot in the Blues' powerful lineup, he spent a season in the VFA with North Melbourne before returning to the VFL to play his most consistent football with Fitzroy between 1910 and 1912. His league career was eventually cut short by his profession rather than his form; a transfer to the Beechworth Police Station forced his departure from Melbourne, though he later made a lone cameo alongside Jim for Hawthorn in the VFA and survived a chest wound while serving in the First World War.
