Family

Billy Duckworth was a hard-nosed defender who became a cult hero at Essendon during the club's golden era in the mid-1980s. Recruited from West Perth in the WAFL, he arrived at Windy Hill in 1982 and quickly established a reputation for his uncompromising attack on both the ball and the opposition. While primarily deployed as a back pocket or half-back flanker who thrived on physical contests, Duckworth possessed the versatility to drift forward and kick crucial goals, playing with a distinctive aggression that endeared him to the Bomber faithful.

His career highlights are headlined by the 1984 Grand Final, where his inspirational performance saw him awarded the Norm Smith Medal as Essendon broke a 19-year premiership drought. A dual premiership player who featured prominently in the back-to-back triumph of 1985, Duckworth remained a fierce competitor for the Bombers until persistent injuries slowed his output in his final years. He retired after the 1990 season, remembered as one of the toughest operators of his generation and a pivotal figure in Kevin Sheedy's first great side.
