Family

Recruited from West Perth, John Duckworth arrived at Fitzroy in 1970 as a rugged utility from Lake Grace, Western Australia. The older brother of future Essendon premiership star Billy Duckworth, he brought a similar uncompromising physical presence to the Lions, often operating as a half-back flanker or ruck-rover who thrived on the contest. Despite his hardness at the ball, his VFL career was fragmented across seven seasons, limiting him to 58 senior appearances before he departed the club in 1976. His footballing legacy was ultimately defined after leaving Victoria, as he moved to the SANFL to play for Central District, where he became a dominant figure and won the 1979 Magarey Medal.
