Family

Bob Spargo represents the second link in one of Australian football's most enduring dynasties, arriving at the club as the son of former player Bob Spargo Sr. Initially starting as a half-forward, he established himself as a high-quality centreman, playing a pivotal role in the Bulldogs' 1961 campaign that culminated in a Grand Final appearance against Hawthorn. Despite polling well in the 1962 Brownlow Medal and entering his prime, Spargo departed the VFL after the 1963 season to accept a captain-coach role with West Perth in the WAFL, where he later won a Simpson Medal representing Western Australia. His contribution to the game extends beyond his on-field performance, as he serves as the bridge between his father and subsequent AFL players Paul and Charlie Spargo, who together formed the competition's first four-generation playing family.
