Bio
Recruited from Leongatha in the Gippsland region, Bob Standfield was a rugged ruckman and defender who made a solid impression at Essendon in the late 1930s. He played the vast majority of his top-level football at Windy Hill, utilising his height and physical presence to battle in the ruck or lock down key defensive posts. His VFL career was severely disrupted by World War II; he enlisted in the Army in early 1940, a commitment that effectively ended his consistent run in the league. His solitary appearance for Carlton came under unique circumstances in 1942, when he donned the navy blue for a single match while on military leave before transferring to the RAAF. Standfield eventually returned to Victoria to play for Brunswick in the VFA and finished his career captain-coaching in country football.
