Bio
Hailing from the South Gippsland town of Fish Creek, Paul Standfield established a country recruiting pathway that would later become part of Footscray folklore. Standing 183cm, he was considered a significant tall for the 1930s, allowing him to operate as a key position utility or relief follower. He made his debut in 1936 and played 42 games over five seasons, serving as a supporting tall in a lineup that was building toward competitive relevance, including the club's 1938 finals campaign. A popular clubman who served as a groomsman for team legend Arthur Olliver, Standfield's career was effectively curtailed by the onset of the Second World War, with his final VFL appearance coming at the conclusion of the 1940 season. His legacy at the Western Oval was revived decades later when his relative, Barry Standfield, continued the Fish Creek connection in the 1990s.
