Bio
Recruited from Glenelg with the second overall pick in the 1997 National Draft, Brad Ottens arrived at Richmond carrying the high expectations placed on elite key position prospects. During his time at Punt Road, he displayed immense talent as a versatile ruck-forward, peaking with All-Australian honours in 2001, but persistent back and knee injuries often interrupted his continuity. Seeking a fresh start and greater team success, Ottens requested a trade to Geelong at the end of 2004, a high-stakes move that saw the Cats part with two first-round draft picks to secure his services.
While his start at Geelong was slowed by further injury setbacks, Ottens eventually evolved into the structural linchpin of the club's golden era. He was rarely a high-volume possession winner, but his physical presence at centre bounces and ability to drift forward to take contested marks made him invaluable to the team's balance. He became a three-time premiership player, famously remembered for a crucial rundown tackle in the 2007 Preliminary Final that typified the side's desperation. Ottens retired immediately following the 2011 Grand Final victory, having emphatically justified the high price Geelong paid to bring him to Kardinia Park.
