Family

The elder brother of Geelong triple-premiership star Brad, Luke Ottens hailed from strong South Australian stock as the son of Sturt great Dean Ottens. A key position prospect capable of holding down a defensive post or pinch-hitting in the ruck, he had a false start to his AFL life after being selected by Port Adelaide in the 1997 Pre-season Draft but never playing a game. Snapped up by Melbourne with pick 50 in the 1997 National Draft, his career was immediately hampered by groin issues that wiped out his first season. He eventually broke through for a memorable debut in Round 1, 1999, where he lined up directly against his brother, but his time at the top level was cruelled by injury. After playing just four consecutive matches, Ottens suffered a series of devastating knee injuries playing for VFL affiliate Sandringham, forcing the Demons to delist him at the end of 2000 before he returned to the SANFL with Glenelg.
