Bio
Recruited from Sandhurst in the Bendigo Football League, Brendan Hartney arrived at Princes Park with the difficult assignment of breaking into one of the strongest defensive units in VFL history. A mobile half-back flanker who could also run through the wing, Hartney possessed good pace and strong hands overhead, but his path to regular senior selection was blocked by club legends like Bruce Doull, Ken Hunter, and Val Perovic. Consequently, he spent much of his five-year tenure providing valuable depth for the Blues during their back-to-back premiership era of 1981 and 1982, often dominating at reserves level but finding opportunities in the senior side limited. Despite never cementing a permanent spot in the starting line-up, he remained a serviceable contributor when called upon to cover injuries, tallying 32 games before finishing his VFL career at the end of the 1985 season.
