Bio
Arriving at Punt Road with a promising junior pedigree, Brian Shinners graduated from Richmond’s under-19 premiership factory to follow in the footsteps of his older brother, Kevin. Initially deployed as a back-pocket or half-back flanker, he struggled to break into a formidable Tigers lineup destined for the 1969 flag, managing just two senior appearances as a reserve. Seeking greater opportunity, Shinners transferred to Hawthorn in 1970, where he reinvented himself as a capable ruck-rover. Despite this shift, he found himself on the fringe of another golden era, notably missing out on the Hawks' 1971 senior premiership after playing in the semi-final, though he did claim the club's Reserves Best and Fairest award that season. He departed the VFL after a Reserves premiership in 1972 to become a long-serving captain for Dandenong in the VFA, while his football legacy continues in the modern era through his granddaughter, AFLW star Georgia Gee.
