Bio
Recruited by Melbourne with the fifth selection in the 2003 National Draft, Brock McLean quickly established himself as a hardened inside midfielder capable of winning the contested ball. Touted early in his career as a future captain of the Demons, he served in the leadership group and finished runner-up in the 2008 Best and Fairest. However, his tenure at the club ended abruptly when he requested a high-profile trade to Carlton at the end of 2009, citing a desire to play finals football rather than endure Melbourne's prolonged rebuilding phase.
Arriving at Princes Park, McLean's initial impact was stifled by persistent hip and knee injuries that saw him spend significant time in the VFL. He eventually fought his way back into the senior side, reinventing himself as a tagger and clearance specialist, notably polling well in the 2012 Brownlow Medal count during a career-best season for the Blues. While his lack of pace was often scrutinised, his physical commitment to the contest remained his trademark until he was delisted at the conclusion of the 2014 season.
