Bio
The son of Carlton premiership player Rod McLean and uncle of future Blue Brock McLean, Ricky McLean was a powerfully built full-forward whose raw talent was often overshadowed by his on-field volatility. Recruited from Moonee Imperials, he struggled to cement a spot in a star-studded Carlton forward line, with his six-season tenure at Princes Park repeatedly stalled by injuries and tribunal suspensions. He crossed to Richmond in 1972 seeking greater opportunity and immediately found his stride, forming a physically intimidating partnership with Neil Balme and finishing as the Tigers' equal-leading goalkicker in his debut season. A lethal left-foot kick, McLean started in the 1972 Grand Final against his former club but was forced out of the high-scoring affair with a hamstring injury by half-time. His VFL career ended abruptly in 1976 after he received a massive 16-week suspension for multiple charges in a reserves match, cementing his legacy as a gifted but temperamental enforcer.
