Selected with the first pick in the 2017 National Draft from the Western Jets, Cam Rayner arrived at Brisbane carrying the heavy expectations of a number one selection and drawing immediate comparisons to powerful midfielders like Dustin Martin. He wasted little time impacting the senior side, playing every game in his first two seasons as a dynamic forward, though he had to work hard to build the aerobic capacity required for genuine midfield rotation. His progression faced a significant test when he ruptured his ACL in the 2021 pre-season, forcing him to miss the entire year and watch the Lions' finals campaign from the sidelines before returning to recapture his explosive form.

Rayner evolved into a unique weapon for the Lions, utilising his brute strength to burst through stoppages and his booming right foot to score from outside 50. A key component of Brisbane's 2024 premiership triumph, his ability to stand up in big moments and provide a physical presence forward of centre became his trademark. By 2026, he had transitioned from a burst player with 'X-factor' into a consistent senior leader, integral to the club's sustained success during their premiership window.
