Bio
Arriving at Glenferrie Oval from local side Kew, Cec Austen was the first of his family to represent Hawthorn, paving the way for his younger brothers Bob and future Brownlow Medallist Colin. He made a sharp impression as a forward during the tumultuous 1942 season, highlighted by a bag of four goals against St Kilda at Toorak Park in only his second senior appearance. Despite this promising start, his VFL journey was abruptly curtailed by World War II, with his service in the RAAF taking him away from the game just as he was finding his feet. Although his football tally halted at five games, Austen remained a notable figure in Australian sport, later playing first-class cricket for South Australia and living to the age of 98 as the patriarch of a three-generation footballing dynasty.
