Teams

Recruited from Yarra Junction via Collingwood Tech, Charlie Newman served a demanding apprenticeship in the reserves—where he played over 50 games and won a premiership—before finally earning his senior debut. A gifted all-round sportsman who also excelled at cricket and swimming, he was initially viewed as a fast-moving follower but eventually found his niche as a defender, utilising his pace to play effectively from the back pocket and half-back flank. Despite his athletic promise and some fine defensive performances, he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the Magpies' starting lineup and crossed to Melbourne in 1943 in search of greater opportunities during the war years. He spent three seasons with the Demons as a reliable backman, blazing a trail that was later followed by his brother Dave, who also represented both clubs in the post-war era.
