Bio
Recruited from the Fitzroy District side, Dave Newman established himself as a capable half-forward flanker at Collingwood during the mid-1940s. The younger brother of Melbourne player Charlie Newman, Dave became a regular fixture at Victoria Park before his career took an unusual turn during the 1947 season. After playing for the Magpies in Round 5, he crossed to Melbourne just weeks later to join his brother-in-law Richie Emselle, becoming one of the rare players to represent two clubs in the same VFL season. His time with the Demons was brief, adding just four games before he departed the league at age 24 to become playing coach of Tongala, where he immediately guided the club to a premiership the following year.
