Bio
Recruited from Melbourne Grammar, Chris Langford arrived at Glenferrie Oval in the early 1980s and rapidly evolved into the premier full-back of his generation. Unlike the traditional stoppers of the era who focused solely on spoiling, Langford was a prototype for the modern defender, utilising his significant athleticism and composure to intercept marks and rebound from the last line. He became the defensive anchor of Hawthorn's dominant side, playing a crucial role in four premiership victories between 1986 and 1991 and earning multiple All-Australian selections for his ability to quell the league's most dangerous full-forwards while simultaneously launching counter-attacks.
Langford's contribution to Hawthorn extended beyond his statistical achievements, particularly during the club's existential crisis in 1996. In what became known as the "Merger Game" against Melbourne, he famously held his guernsey aloft to the crowd upon leaving the field, a gesture that galvanised support against the proposed amalgamation with the Demons. He served as club captain during the mid-1990s and was rightfully named at full-back in Hawthorn's Team of the Century. His connection to the Hawks continued well past his retirement, seeing him inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame and watching his son, Will, play a key role in the club's 2014 premiership.
