Born in Stratford and educated at Caulfield Grammar, Claud Crowl was a gifted junior athlete whose brief VFL career was born out of club turmoil. His opportunity at St Kilda arrived late in the 1911 season when he was one of nine debutants rushed into the side to replace regular senior players who had gone on strike. The cousin of Geelong captain Joe Crowl, Claud demonstrated versatility across his three games, starting as a defender in a back pocket before being swung to centre half-forward for his final appearance against Richmond. He walked away from the game at season's end to work as a farmer in Poowong, but his story is permanently etched into football history by the tragedy of the Great War. Crowl was killed in action during the landing at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915—the same day as fellow debutant Fen McDonald—and he is today commemorated by the Crowl-McDonald Medal, awarded to the best player in matches between St Kilda and Carlton.
