Bio
Recruited from Chilwell, Joe Crowl is remembered less for his brief on-field tenure and more for his ultimate sacrifice during World War I. The South Melbourne-born auctioneer managed just four senior appearances for Geelong during the 1906 season, unable to cement a permanent place in the side before his football career concluded. His legacy is inextricably linked to the Great War, where he served as a Captain in the 8th Light Horse Regiment. Crowl was killed in action at Gallipoli in June 1915, tragically falling just two months after his cousin, St Kilda footballer Claude Crowl, died during the initial ANZAC landing. He remains one of the brave VFL players honoured for trading the guernsey for a uniform and never returning home.
