Bio
Hailing from County Tyrone, Conor McKenna joined the long lineage of Irish talent in the AFL when he was signed by Essendon as a Category B rookie in late 2014. Possessing blistering speed and a natural instinct for taking the game on, he quickly developed from a raw prospect into one of the league's most damaging rebounding defenders. However, his time at Tullamarine was often punctuated by bouts of homesickness, a struggle that came to a head during the disrupted 2020 season. After 79 games for the Bombers, McKenna made the difficult decision to retire from the AFL and return to Ireland, where he achieved the ultimate success in Gaelic football by helping Tyrone win the 2021 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.
The lure of the Sherrin proved too strong to ignore forever, and McKenna returned to Australia to sign with the Brisbane Lions ahead of the 2023 season, driven by the rare opportunity to become a dual-code champion. He slotted seamlessly into the Lions' backline, adding veteran experience and his trademark dash to a side firmly in the premiership window. After falling just short in the 2023 Grand Final, McKenna etched his name into the history books the following year, becoming just the second player after Tadhg Kennelly to win both an All-Ireland title and an AFL Premiership. Now an established senior figure at Brisbane, he continues to use his pace and creativity to break lines and drive the Lions into attack.
