Born in Ulverstone, Tasmania, Albert "Curly" Linton was a resilient midfielder whose football journey was defined by a remarkable return from the First World War. After showing early promise with Essendon A, Linton enlisted and survived a severe chest wound at Polygon Wood that narrowly missed his heart, eventually recovering to become a star for North Melbourne in the VFA. A brilliant centreman known for his high standing among the faithful, he was voted the club's "Most Popular Player" in 1924 before guiding the team into the big league the following season.
