Bio
A rugged foundation player, Dan Moriarty began his VFL career with Fitzroy in the league's inaugural 1897 season having already tasted VFA premiership success with the club. After a one-year stint in the country with Rutherglen, he crossed to Melbourne in 1899 where he quickly established a reputation as a combative and physical operator. His aggressive playstyle often attracted scrutiny; he became the first Melbourne player to face the VFL tribunal—charged with umpire jostling—and consequently missed the club's 1900 premiership triumph after receiving a suspension for striking late in the home-and-away campaign. Moriarty's career ended tragically in 1903 when he was struck by a train and killed at just 28 years of age, with a coronial inquest suggesting an epileptic seizure led to the accident.
