Bio
Geoff Moriarty was a defensive pillar for Fitzroy during the club's golden era, bridging the gap between the VFA and the newly formed VFL. Born in Alexandra, he originally debuted for Carlton in the VFA before crossing to the Maroons in 1892, where he established himself as a formidable full-back. While his famous son Jack would later become a goalkicking legend at the other end of the ground, Geoff made his name stopping them, playing a key role in Fitzroy’s 1895 VFA premiership before becoming a foundation player in the inaugural VFL season of 1897.
His longevity and reliability were hallmarks of a career that saw him anchor the defence for over a decade. Moriarty featured in Fitzroy’s 1899 and 1905 premiership sides, providing crucial experience in a backline that underpinned the club's early dominance. After hanging up his boots, he cemented his status as a club pioneer by becoming Fitzroy's first official coach in 1911, guiding the team for two seasons and leaving an enduring legacy at Brunswick Street.
