Family

Recruited from Colac, Dan Murray was a sturdy half-back whose career with Fitzroy was punctuated by a significant detour to the VFA. After debuting in 1933, he crossed to Prahran where he spent five seasons, missing their 1937 premiership due to a lengthy tribunal suspension before returning to the Lions in 1938. His tenure was further interrupted by a captain-coaching stint at Horsham, but he returned to Brunswick Street during the war years to provide experienced cover in defence. Although he missed out on field selection for the club's 1944 Grand Final triumph, he was a member of the premiership squad as the designated reserve. He later served the club as chairman of selectors, but his most enduring contribution to Fitzroy was undoubtedly his son, Kevin "Bulldog" Murray, who would go on to become the most decorated player in the club's history.
