Family

Recruited from Central District with pick 17 in the 2009 National Draft, Daniel Menzel was a highly skilled medium forward whose career became defined by a harrowing succession of knee injuries. After emerging as a dynamic attacking threat during Geelong's 2011 campaign, he ruptured his ACL in the Qualifying Final against Hawthorn, sparking a four-year absence from senior football that necessitated four knee reconstructions. Menzel displayed profound resilience to return in 2016, reinventing himself as a crafty forward who relied on strong overhead marking and elite goal sense to remain an effective scorer despite compromised mobility. Although he proved he could still impact the scoreboard, list management pressures saw him delisted by the Cats at the end of 2018, leading to a lifeline with Sydney as a delisted free agent. He managed just seven games for the Swans in 2019 before persistent groin trouble forced his retirement, leaving a legacy as a talented footballer who was cruelly denied his absolute prime.
