Bio
Recruited from Peel Thunder with the second pick in the 2002 National Draft, Daniel Wells arrived at North Melbourne carrying significant expectation as the high-end talent secured during the turbulent exit of Wayne Carey. He quickly developed into a smooth-moving midfielder, possessing elite kicking skills, distinct evasiveness, and an explosive burst of speed that allowed him to break lines and finish cleanly near goal. While his career was frequently interrupted by osteitis pubis and soft tissue setbacks, Wells secured his standing as a premier ball-user at Arden Street, winning the Syd Barker Medal twice and earning a reputation as one of the most gifted Indigenous talents of his generation.
After 14 seasons with the Kangaroos, Wells exercised his free agency rights to join Collingwood ahead of the 2017 season, accepting a three-year deal that offered greater security than North Melbourne was willing to provide a veteran with his injury history. His time at the Magpies was heavily restricted by physical ailments, limiting him to just 15 appearances over three years as he struggled to get on the park. Despite the frustrating finish to his playing days, he retired in mid-2019 remembered for his sublime skill level and highlight-reel moments, including the iconic mid-air "Jackie Chan" goal against Fremantle in 2004.
