Recruited from County Kilkenny where he captained the minor hurling team, Darragh Joyce joined St Kilda as an international rookie looking to translate his athletic traits to Australian football. Operating primarily as a key defender, he demonstrated competitiveness and composure but struggled to command a regular spot in the Saints' best 22, resulting in his delisting after six seasons at Moorabbin. Joyce was immediately handed an AFL lifeline by the Brisbane Lions via the pre-season supplemental selection period, brought in to provide specific defensive coverage following injuries to key personnel. throughout his tenure at both clubs, the Irishman has largely functioned as a reliable depth option and VFL stalwart, stepping into the senior side sporadically to fill structural gaps in the backline when required.
