Family

Recruited from North Ringwood, Kevin Walsh overcame early perceptions of being a gangly and awkward mover to become a cornerstone of Essendon's celebrated 1980s backline. While his unconventional style initially drew skepticism from the outer, coach Kevin Sheedy persisted with the tall utility, a decision that eventually paid dividends as Walsh evolved into a reliable and deceptively quick Centre Half Back. He cemented his spot in the side during the club's era of dominance, playing a vital role in the famous back-to-back premierships of 1984 and 1985.

Walsh is perhaps most fondly remembered for a moment of resilience during the 1984 Grand Final, where he was knocked unconscious in a collision with Hawthorn's Robert Dipierdomenico but famously waved to the roaring crowd while being stretchered off the ground. His individual career peak arrived shortly after the flag triumphs, earning All-Australian selection in 1986 and winning the E.J. Whitten Medal as Victoria's best player in a State of Origin clash against South Australia. He remained a steady defensive presence at Windy Hill until his retirement in 1991, departing as a Life Member and a key figure in the club's history.
