Recruited from Yarrawonga in the Ovens & Murray region, Darryl Beale was a sturdy key defender who faced the difficult task of breaking into a star-studded Richmond lineup during the height of the Tom Hafey era. Standing 187cm, he primarily operated at full-back or half-back, proving his worth as a reliable pillar in the club's reserves where he was a key member of the 1966 premiership side and played in the 1967 and 1968 Grand Finals. He eventually earned his senior opportunity in 1968, stringing together nine consecutive games in a side defending its premiership title, but found it difficult to retain his spot against established stars. Seeking greater opportunity, Beale moved to South Australia to play for Central District in the SANFL before forging a decorated career in the Barossa, Light & Gawler Football Association, where he captain-coached Angaston to back-to-back premierships.
