Recruited from Yarrawonga in the Ovens & Murray League, Ross Beale was a tall key position prospect who joined North Melbourne as part of the club’s concerted effort to harvest talent from its rich country zone. The younger brother of Richmond defender Darryl Beale, he arrived at Arden Street as an 18-year-old and stood 188cm, a significant height for a teenager in that era. Beale was primarily utilized as a key defender who could pinch-hit in the ruck, debuting late in the 1970 season as the Kangaroos limped toward the wooden spoon. He managed six games in his rookie year and added three more in 1971, but he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the senior lineup. Beale departed the VFL scene just prior to the club's aggressive recruiting drive and resurgence under Ron Barassi.
