Family

Recruited from local club Braybrook, Dennis Collins was a pacy, bearded wingman with a strong football pedigree as the son of Essendon premiership player Jack Collins. Establishing himself at Footscray, he played 100 games for the Bulldogs, utilising his speed and aggression to break lines through the midfield. He crossed to Carlton in 1978, where he immediately featured in the Blues' finals campaign and became part of football folklore for an infamous on-field altercation with St Kilda’s Robbie Muir.

Despite his talent, Collins’ career is often remembered for his agonising near-misses with premiership glory at his subsequent clubs. After struggling to hold his spot in Carlton’s 1979 premiership side, he requested a clearance to Richmond for the 1980 season. He played 17 games for the Tigers that year, including a Qualifying Final win over his former club, but was sensationally dropped for the Grand Final after missing a mandatory session with the club psychologist. He watched on as an emergency as Richmond secured the flag, retiring from VFL football shortly after at just 27 years of age.
