Bio
A pint-sized rover promoted from the St Kilda thirds, Derek King faced the difficult task of breaking into a powerful Saints lineup fresh off their 1966 premiership triumph. Standing just 170cm, he was a crafty ball-winner who debuted as an 18-year-old in 1967 but found senior opportunities scarce, managing just 11 games over three seasons before departing Moorabbin. While his VFL career was brief, King forged a brilliant legacy in the VFA with Oakleigh, where he became one of the competition's most decorated players by winning both the Division 1 J.J. Liston Trophy and the Division 2 Field Trophy. He later became a premiership-winning coach in suburban football, and his family connection to the elite level continued through his son, Clinton King, who played for Collingwood, Richmond, and St Kilda in the early 2000s.
