Recruited from Pyalong in central Victoria, Des Griffin was a fringe player whose brief VFL career was curiously bookended by matches against Collingwood. The older brother of future St Kilda footballer Frank Griffin, Des made his senior debut for the Saints in Round 14, 1904, but was unable to hold his spot in the side following a heavy loss. He crossed to South Melbourne for the 1905 season, where he again managed just a solitary appearance—coincidentally also against the Magpies in Round 17—before falling out of contention. Unable to secure a regular berth at either club, Griffin finished his time at the elite level with just two games and no goals to his name.
