Family

A robust follower recruited from Sandringham in the VFA, Des Kennedy arrived at Moorabbin with a reputation as a big-game player after kicking a premiership-winning goal for the Zebras as a teenager. He immediately became a fixture in the St Kilda lineup, playing every match in his debut 1965 season, including the Grand Final loss to Essendon. However, his time at the Saints is best remembered for a cruel twist of fate during the club’s most famous year; despite being a regular contributor throughout 1966, a knee injury sustained in the Second Semi-Final forced him to watch St Kilda’s solitary premiership victory from the sidelines. Kennedy played on until 1970 before returning to Sandringham to cement his legacy as a VFA great, while his son Matthew later continued the family tradition at the highest level with Brisbane.
