Recruited from Southport in the QAFL, Matthew Kennedy was a crucial local acquisition for the Brisbane Bears, joining the club ahead of the 1990 season. Representing a vital pathway for Queensland talent during the club's difficult formative years at Carrara, Kennedy established himself as a durable and disciplined defender. He was capable of locking down on small to medium forwards and provided stability in the back half, rarely playing a flashy brand of football but earning respect for his consistency and team-first attitude.

Kennedy remained a constant through the club's transition from the Bears to the Brisbane Lions following the merger with Fitzroy. As the list depth improved and competition for spots intensified under Leigh Matthews, Kennedy's experience proved vital. His career culminated in the perfect exit; after more than a decade of service that spanned the club's lowest ebbs, he held his spot for the 2001 Grand Final against Essendon. He retired immediately following the victory, departing the game as a premiership player and a 187-game veteran who had witnessed the franchise rise from obscurity to the pinnacle of the AFL.
