Bio
Recruited from Birchip in the Victorian Mallee, Des Ryan was a sturdy key position utility who rose through the Tigers' ranks to taste premiership success with the Under-19s in 1985. Standing 192cm, he possessed a strong overhead mark and a long kick, attributes that allowed him to swing between full-back, the forward line, and the ruck to plug gaps as needed. His senior debut in 1986 is best remembered for an accidental but heavy mid-air collision with Sydney high-flyer Warwick Capper, an incident that marked his arrival with physical presence. Ryan played alongside his younger brother Stephen at Punt Road, but his seven-season tenure was frequently hampered by injuries that prevented him from cementing a permanent role in the best 22. Despite winning a Reserves Best and Fairest and showing promise as a structural pillar, he was delisted at the end of 1992, eventually finding significant form and leadership success as the captain of Frankston in the VFA.
