Recruited from Birchip and the younger brother of Tigers utility Des Ryan, Stephen Ryan produced one of the more memorable debut seasons in Richmond history. Standing 190cm with the athletic profile to play on a wing or half-forward flank, he made an immediate impact in 1990, topping the club’s goalkicking with 28 goals and finishing third in the Best and Fairest as a rookie. Despite this rapid ascent, Ryan struggled to maintain continuity over the following seasons as injuries and form fluctuations limited his output. He sought a fresh start at Collingwood via the 1994 Pre-Season Draft but managed only eight games in black and white before departing the AFL. He later reunited with Des at Frankston in the VFL, leaving a legacy defined largely by his explosive introduction to league football.
