Born in Richmond, Dick Pirrie was a pioneering figure for Melbourne during the VFL's foundation years. A capable forward who could find the goals, he booted 11 majors across three seasons but struggled to maintain a consistent spot in a competitive lineup. Pirrie featured four times during Melbourne's historic 1900 premiership campaign but lost his place in the side by Round 12, ultimately missing out on the club's Grand Final triumph. Seeking more opportunities, he transferred to Richmond in the VFA in 1901, where he played out the remainder of his career. While his on-field tenure was brief, Pirrie left a lasting legacy as the patriarch of a distinguished football family; his sons Dick (a Hawthorn player and D-Day casualty) and Kevin both played at the highest level, while his grandson Stephen represented three VFL clubs.
