Recruited from local feeder club South Melbourne Districts, Don Matthews was a diminutive rover and forward pocket who represented South Melbourne during the late 1950s. Standing just 170cm, he relied on his agility and goal sense to impact matches, breaking into the senior lineup in 1956—the same year as future club immortal Bob Skilton. While the emergence of Skilton created significant competition for on-ball roles, Matthews proved to be a handy contributor in the forward half, managing to boot 20 goals across his three-year tenure. He served as a rotational small man at the Lakeside Oval for 31 games before finishing his VFL career at the conclusion of the 1958 season.
