Teams

Recruited from VFA powerhouse North Melbourne, Herb Matthews Sr. endured a disjointed start to his VFL career, managing just a handful of senior appearances for South Melbourne and Richmond before the competition was disrupted by the Great War. It was during his post-war tenure with Melbourne that he finally established himself as a senior regular, shouldering the ruck duties for the Redlegs over four consistent seasons. A heavy-set and physical follower, he returned to the Lakeside Oval in 1923 to form a formidable, albeit brief, ruck partnership with the legendary Roy Cazaly, helping the club reach a preliminary final. While his own playing days were solid rather than spectacular, his greatest legacy at South Melbourne was establishing a famous bloodline, as the father of future Brownlow Medallist Herbie Matthews and grandfather of Herb Jr.
