Bio
Recruited to Richmond with pick 2 in the 2010 Pre-Season Draft, Dylan Grimes entered the system as the younger brother of Melbourne defender Jack Grimes. His early years at Punt Road were defined by persistent hamstring injuries that threatened to derail his career before it truly began, eventually requiring specialist treatment in Germany to stabilize his body. Once durable, Grimes developed into one of the league's most versatile defenders, capable of locking down dangerous small forwards or playing tall against key position opponents. Although often underrated externally during the Tigers' initial ascent, he became a critical pillar of the club's premiership dynasty, featuring as a key defensive anchor in the 2017, 2019, and 2020 flag-winning sides.
Renowned for his exceptional closing speed, spoiling technique, and ability to execute desperate defensive acts, Grimes earned an All-Australian blazer in 2019. He peaked individually in 2021, winning the Jack Dyer Medal as the club's best and fairest after stepping up to marshal an injury-depleted backline. Following Trent Cotchin's resignation, Grimes served as co-captain alongside Toby Nankervis for two seasons, providing veteran leadership during a transitional period for the club. He retired in 2024 as a Richmond Life Member and a celebrated one-club player, leaving a legacy as one of the most reliable defenders of his generation.
