Bio
Recruited from the Northern Knights with pick 14 in the 2007 National Draft, Jack Grimes established himself as a courageous medium defender who could rotate through the midfield. Known for his intercept marking and ability to read the play across half-back, his career is most often defined by his appointment as co-captain alongside Jack Trengove in 2012. At just 22, the pair became the youngest captains in VFL/AFL history, a move designed to herald a new era under coach Mark Neeld. However, the promotion coincided with a tumultuous period for the Demons, and Grimes was forced to shoulder significant leadership scrutiny while the team struggled for on-field competitiveness.
Persistent injuries, particularly back and hamstring issues, frequently interrupted Grimes' momentum and prevented him from consistently reaching his potential. After relinquishing the captaincy following the 2014 season to focus on his own form, he found it difficult to hold a spot in the senior side under incoming coach Paul Roos as the club began to rebuild its list profile. He spent much of his final two seasons playing in the VFL and was delisted at the end of 2016, having shown immense resilience to reach exactly 100 games despite the physical and circumstantial challenges he faced throughout his tenure.
