Bio
A true product of the local area recruited from South Districts, Eddie Lane was a diminutive rover whose clever ball use and sharp goal sense made him a standout at the Lake Oval during the 1950s. Standing just 168cm, Lane was a courageous on-baller who drifted forward with devastating effect, a trait exemplified when he topped the club's goalkicking in consecutive seasons (1954–55). His 1954 campaign was particularly outstanding, seeing him claim the Best and Fairest, earn Victorian state selection, and finish equal-third in the Brownlow Medal. Despite establishing himself as one of the competition's premier rovers and becoming a Life Member of the club, Lane departed the VFL in his prime at age 27, accepting a significantly higher-paying captain-coach role with Bairnsdale in the country leagues.
