Bio
Recruited from the Brougham Street Methodists, Edric Bickford was a capable half-forward whose league career was defined by a significant interruption for military service. After managing just a single senior appearance for Essendon in 1912, the Kensington local put his trade as a confectioner on hold to enlist in the AIF, eventually serving as a Company Quartermaster Sergeant across Gallipoli and the Western Front. He returned to Australia in 1919 and revived his football journey at rival club Carlton the following season, proving to be a reliable avenue to goal who averaged a major a game during his three-year stint at Princes Park. Bickford was the brother of Carlton and Melbourne utility Albert Bickford and the patriarch of a notable football family that included his son George and grandson Stephen, who both went on to play for Melbourne.
